Quien es el Dr. Mahabir P. Gupta?
El comité directivo del XXXI Congreso Científico Nacional 2023 dedica esta nueva versión de su congreso bianual a la memoria del profesor Dr. Mahabir P. Gupta (1942-2020), en homenaje a sus méritos académicos, dedicación a la docencia universitaria, la producción y difusión del conocimiento y en especial por su vocación por la formación de personal especializado en el campo de la farmacognosia en Panamá y América Latina. El doctor Gupta obtuvo su licenciatura en Farmacia en la Universidad de Rajashthan y su maestría en Química Farmacéutica en la Universidad Hindú de Banaras en su país natal, la India. Su doctorado en Ciencias Farmacéuticas le fue concedido por la Universidad Estatal de Washington, Estados Unidos e inmediatamente después de recibir su título obtuvo la beca de investigación “Alexander von Humboldt", que le permitió trabajar con el profesor Hildebet Wagner, en la Universidad de Munich, en el descubrimiento de fármacos a partir del estudio de las plantas. Concluidos sus estudios se radicó en Panamá donde se casó con Olga Barberena con quien procrearon cuatro hijos. Asimismo, se incorporó a la Universidad de Panamá en el año de 1972, institución donde laboró por más de 45 años, ocupando diversos cargos académicos y administrativos.

El Dr. Gupta fue decano de la Facultad de Farmacia y fundador y organizador del Centro de Investigaciones Farmacognósticas de la Flora Panameña (CIFLORPAN), creado mediante el acuerdo del Consejo Académico 10-92 del 29 de abril de 1992. Sus amigos, colegas y colaboradores lo describen como un gran científico, un profesional dedicado a la investigación y la producción de conocimientos y, sobre todo, un gran líder siempre dispuesto a apoyar a su equipo de trabajo. Otros señalan que dedicó su vida a la formación integral de generaciones de investigadores con una visión crítica, deseos de superación constante, compromiso con la población, trabajo arduo y amor a la ciencia. Su trabajo científico fue reconocido mundialmente por su investigación pionera en etnobotánica, bioprospección, química de productos naturales y descubrimientos de fármacos de la biodiversidad tropical de Panamá y América Latina. Fue autor de aproximadamente 300 publicaciones en revistas indexadas de gran impacto en el área de productos naturales y 5 libros sobre plantas medicinales latinoamericanas.
The Executive Committee of the Thirty-first National Scientific Congress (2023) dedicates this new version of its highest biennial scientific meeting to the lasting memory of Professor Dr. Mahabir Gupta, honoring his academic achievements, his commitment to higher education and to the generation and diffussion of scientific knowledge, and, in particular, to his enduring dedication to the training of highly specialized new scientists in the field of Pharmacognosy, both in Panama and Latin America.
Dr. Gupta got his B.Sc. degree in Pharmacy at the University of Rajastan and his M.Sc. degree in Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the Hindu University of Benares, both in his native country, India. His Doctorate in Pharmaceutical Sciences was granted by the State University of Washington, United States of America. Immidately after completing his doctoral degree, he was awarded an Alexander Von Humbolt research fellowship, which allowed him to work under Prof. Hildebet Wagner supervision, at the University of Munich, Germany, specializing in the discovery of new substances with pharmaceutical apllications, derived from plants.
Once Dr. Gupta completed his studies, he moved to Panama, where he married Ms. Olga Barberena and established a family that included four children.
Likewise, in 1972 he joined the Universidad de Panama as a Full Time Professor, where he worked for Forty-five (45) consecutive years, having occupied several high level academic and administrative positions. Dr. Gupta was the Dean of the School of Pharmacy and founder and organizer of CIFLORPAN (Centre for Pharmacognostic Research on the Panamanian Flora), created through the Universidad de Panama´s Academic Council Agreement numbered 10-92, dated April 29th, 1992.
His friends, colleagues, collaborators and students describe him as a great scientist, a committed professional researcher and knowledge producer and, above all, a great leader, always eager to support his team and colleagues. Others like to remark that he dedicated his life to the integral formation of new generations of researchers, with a critical view, constant craving for professional success, commitment with people needs, hardworking attitude and an everlasting love for Science.
His scientific work has been widely recognized, worldwide, for his pioneering efforts in the fields of Ethnobotany, Bioprospecting, Natural Products Chemistry and Drugs Discovery derived from the Tropical Plants Biodiversity, in Panama and in Latin America. He was the author of more than Three Hundred (300) research papers, published in international indexed journals, with high impact in the area of Natural Products. He published five (5) books on Latin American Medicinal Plants, as well.
